Last week Tommy Lambeth’s Construction and Building Systems class had a JAM session, or joint assessment meeting, with representatives from University Division of Space Management, Facilities Design and Construction, and Physical Plant Division to discuss the students’ design proposal for an architectural screen. This screen will be the first element in a new “IARc Student Commons” to be located on the north end of the studio. The screen will divide off an area of approximately 200 square feet to be used by iarc students for a variety of purposes: eating, group meetings, reading, maybe even relaxing. The Commons will eventually include a microwave, small refrigerator, coffee maker, popcorn popper, lounge seating. The screen will incorporate seating and storage into its design.
The purpose of the JAM session was to assess safety, access, structure, material, and maintenance aspects within the requirements of the university. Further development and detailing of the screen was given approval. Tommy’s [3rd] year studio next fall will undertake a design/build project to complete design development, construction, and installation of the screen, as well as other furnishings for the commons.
