Christopher Alexander Who?? [1st] year students

This week first year students are muddling over the intimidating name of Christopher Alexander, and researching his notorious fifteen properties. A brief overview of these properties, for those of you who don’t know, are: The Void, Echoes, Levels of Scale, Roughness, Gradients, Contrast, Deep Interlock and Ambiguity, Local symmetries, Good Shape, Positive Space, and Alternating Repetition. Whew! It’s quite a bit of information to grasp this week! The project, in which we are to research five of these properties, is giving us [1st] years more insight on how beautiful design is and an understanding of the properties that define its beauty. We are also very excited that we are starting to move onto bigger and better things with this project as we are being held to greater expectations like understanding these influential individuals in our field. To apply what we are learning from Mr. Alexander and Stoel, we are to make a five by five example cards for each property this week, being sure to explore different mediums and materials. I will be sure to post some photos of our progress soon!
