IARc and the 2013 Solar Decathlon

September 9, 2012 § Leave a comment

This semester, professors Travis Hicks’ and Stoel Burrowes’ [3rd] year studios have undertaken a collective effort with Hampton University and Old Dominion University in Virginia to form Team Tidewater in the 2013 Solar Decathlon.

IARc has a special chance to be involved in this competition by working with these two schools’ design idea. Our department will have a say in the design of the home’s interior as well as some aspects of its exterior.

The project has been christened “Canopy House.” It is a solar-powered, off-the-grid home incorporating principles of universal design and aging in place. The home will also feature many technological aspects to make it a driving-force design in the 21st century.

This will be a semester-long project that will feature many updates along the way. Below are links to the Solar Decathlon website and the Canopy House website.
