Over the summer, students from Travis Hicks’ and Stoel Burrowes’ [3rd] year IARc studio experienced some great new adventures. Whether getting married, going on an amazing tropical vacation, or working on projects around the house, these students had a blast this summer.
Just Married! Matthew Weikert tied the knot with his fiancé Megan in May 2012. For their honeymoon, they went on a week-long cruise on the Royal Caribbean cruise liner The Allure of the Seas. They got to visit beautiful destinations such as Haiti, Jamaica, and Cozumel. Matthew said the destination they enjoyed most was Haiti and they also thought it was the most beautiful of the three islands.
For two weeks in May, Monica Browning vacationed in Hawaii with her boyfriend and his family. They visited Oahu and spent some time soaking up the sun on Waikiki beach. They also got to explore the rainforests and view the volcanoes, and they spent some time traveling Kauai. Monica said her favorite parts of the trip were going to Kauai, seeing the Na Pali Coast State Park, and going snorkeling. Once she returned from her Hawaiian getaway, Monica had another new summer adventure: she got a job at Bath and Body Works. Monica says she loves her new job and she enjoys getting to work with all of the nice people there. Plus, it’s pretty great to receive the free Bath and Body Works products she gets every once in a while though her employee discount.
Paige Hohlt acquired a unique nannying job in which she lived in Hawaii for a month to care for five children. She was able to hang out on the family’s boat, swim around in the crystal blue water (where she saw wild dolphins and turtles), go tubing, and soak up some sun on Waikiki beach. She also got to tour some neat places like the Honolulu zoo, Pali Outlook, and Pearl Harbor. Not to mention she successfully conquered all of these activities while carting around five children.
Cory Odell, who works at Starbucks, got a promotion at work over the summer.
Anuj Patel went to Puerto Rico and spent some time laying both wood and tile flooring, in addition to building a bench, some shelves, and a few side tables. He also installed a water-saving toilet and a screen door; painted his uncle’s laundry room; and worked on the wiring at his uncle’s new house.
Chelsea Epes went on a vacation to Aruba with her parents this past summer.
Morgan Cates spent two months of her summer working with campus ministries in Myrtle Beach. Her response to the experience was that “it was life-changing!”
Kate Ewen spent her summer working as a program director for a summer camp on the east coast.
Jack Kennedy spent his summer restoring the windows on his house. He worked on stripping away the years of previous paint layers, re-glazing the windows, and repainting them.
